Jazz Funeral

I sketched this composition while crouching on a sidewalk in the French Quarter of New Orleans late at night across from the bar “Jazz Funeral,” listening to the band inside, and watching people come and go. I think of this piece as a light little slice of nightlife, a happy, magical moment filled with characters, and my expressive lines convey this. Also, my particular (as opposed to linear) brushstrokes in which small pieces of vibrant color infuse every corner of the paper, reflect a fragmentary, “sensory overload”-painting style and seemed an appropriate metaphor for this rich, abundant, colorful New Orleans culture.
